After a long cold winter and an icy, snowy, windy “spring”, warmer weather has finally arrived. The grass is turning green, the frogs are making lots of noise, and the cows are loving the sunshine (as we hope you are too)!
We are returning to the Orangeville Farmers Market every Saturday from 8am-1pm starting May 19. Drop by for a visit sometime and check out all the vendors and delicious food! You can try some individual cuts of our 100% grass-fed “orgasmic” organic beef, and also order bundles in advance for pickup at the market or free home delivery. Thank you to everyone who came to Toad Hole to help us get the farm ready for the cold weather! Even though summer has lingered wonderfully this year and it’s hard to believe we’ll be skating on the pond soon instead of swimming in it, we sure benefited from your strong arms and warm hearts cleaning chimneys, clearing trails, cutting wood, etc. A special thanks to our Australian woofers, Lara and Sarah, who almost single-handedly loaded up the woodshed for the winter while also making delicious suppers every evening – so yum!
2016 has been exciting for Toad Hole as we’ve started selling our beef at the Orangeville Farmer’s Market. Come downtown and visit us on Saturday mornings from 8am-1pm and meet us (as well as our neighbours, Fiddle Foot Farm, and their fantastic organic veggies!). We’ll be there until the end of October.
We had some great maple syrup boiling parties, and we’ve had 14 new calves born this Spring! We are all so happy to see the green grass again (especially the cows). We survived the April ice storm with only a few broken branches, and we’re looking forward to a great year!
Early in the summer, our lawnmower broke (my fault!) and a friend suggested we try using the herd to mow the lawn instead. I had been thinking about this in past years since the grass gets so long and it seems like such a waste of fuel and time when we’ve got hungry cows always looking for a nice meal. So, we ran an electric wire around the house and all the things we didn’t want them to eat, such as the garden, and invited them in!
This week was the third time that we let the cows out this year to mow the front lawn, and it has worked marvelously! The first time, they even pruned up our lilac bushes to provide us with a nicer landscape. The second time, a cow gave birth right near the front door which provided a close-up view for our visiting German wwoofers. Every time, they leave a well-trimmed lawn with hardly any effort from us. The only drawbacks are having to clean up a bit of their “fertilizer” afterwards and sometimes being woken in the night by the sound of munching cows outside the bedroom window. But we’re getting used to it.
We’ve got organic grass-fed chickens and beef available now in time for Thanksgiving. Please give us a call if you’ve got any questions!
Spring has finally arrived at Toad Hole Farm! We’ve already welcomed 2 new calves in the past month, and they were jumping and chasing each other around the barnyard today. The pastures are green, and all the cattle seem very happy to be out in the sun (as you can see from this picture we took this week).
We are looking forward to more WWOOFers from across Canada and around the world this summer! It’s been such fun to have them stay with us and learn more about their lives, as well as sharing some of ours. Last year, we had people from the Czech Republic, France, Germany and Canada stay with us.
We are now taking orders for pastured chicken, and we still have some beef left for those interested in stocking up for bbq season. Enjoy the light and warmth!
